Any experienced gamer will tell you that a bad in-game camera can destroy a game, not only because it is frustrating to deal with, but due to the fact that it also affects the controls of the game. Well, I’m sorry to say that Shadow of the Colossus has some of the worst camera issues I have ever experienced. Yes, it’s that bad! The games camera is absolutely horrid. It never stays in single position and even when you manipulate it manually and work it into a perspective which plays comfortably, the camera will start to jerk and pan left

"a flawed masterpiece"

and right, and just screw things up completely. At times it was way too frustrating for me to bear and even had me shouting "this game f***ing sucks." It’s maddening and the issues really take their toll on the final and most difficult colossus battle, which is just unfair. Not only this, but it makes riding Argo an unnecessary hassle. This is my main complaint about the game and it made me wish that I had Nintendo’s upcoming Zelda game in my hands this very minute (damn them for delaying it). If there was a decent camera system, Shadow of the Colossus would’ve been a much, much better game and it’s unfortunate that things are the way they are.

Another depressing piece of information is that Shadow of the Colossus is a very short game. Especially for an epic adventure of its proportion. In all honesty, I drilled through the game in just over eight hours and I was sad to see it end so quickly. Luckily, it is one of those games that you’ll want to experience over again and there is a time trial mode and harder difficulty unlocked after you complete the game for the first time. So, it’s not without reward.

It would be best to call Shadow of the Colossus a flawed masterpiece; the game is amazing in its own right but the various gameplay elements prevent it from being a game every gamer could find enjoyment in. Nevertheless, the game caters to the imagination in its own unique and incredible way, and its music, art direction and cinematic presentation will strike chords within many gamers emotionally. If you enjoy the fantasy world of games in the Legend of Zelda series, you owe it to yourself to pick up Shadow of the Colossus.
