The ancient sword you wield in the game has the power to find these colossi by holding it up when there’s sunlight, thus creating a beam of lift that focuses in a direction to show you where the next giant is. Although, don’t think that simply going in the direction the beam is pointing towards will lead you in the right direction. Granted, most of the time it will, but there will be handful of times where the path you must follow isn’t so obvious. Thus, you may wander around for quite some time and this can be bothersome. However, it should also be noted that the game was initially titled Wanda and the Colossus; "wanda" meaning wanderer in Japanese. So, perhaps this was intentional. Even so, it’s still annoying.

The actual battles with the colossi themselves are incredible. They’re on par with a boss battle you’d encounter in a Legend of Zelda and they’re some of the most enjoyable I’ve played in recent memory. Though, this isn’t saying much either since games like Resident Evil 4 and God of War have been home to some equally amazing boss battles over the past year. Anyway, most of the boss battles involve having you climbing onto these towering giants and stabbing them with your sword in various weak spots, which are often located on the head of the colossus (although they weak spots do change in many of the battles). Now, what makes these boss battles so interesting is that being able to climb onto them is a puzzle of sorts. You’ll often have to research surroundings and learn to use them to you advantage, whether it’s having the colossus knock down pillars, for you to use to jump to higher platforms, or to have them unintentionally cause the ceiling above them to come crashing down, destroying part of their stone armor and revealing their weakness, or a hairy area which you can latch onto.

The only real way you can begin scaling a colossus is to grab hold of their fur. They aren’t stupid so they’ll try to shake you off and you can’t hold on forever. The trick is to hold on for as long as you can and let go whenever you have time to regain your stamina (and a leveled area to stand on). Also, if you do manage to get thrown off of the colossus, you won’t lose too much health, no matter how many hundreds of feet you drop down; you even regain your health after time! These battles can be very exciting, especially the ones against airborne colossi. There’s just something about soaring through the sky and hanging on for dear life as these creatures spin and twirl that’s extremely entertaining.

I have to say that these colossi battles aren’t too difficult, especially for a veteran of games like Zelda. The only difficult part is learning to use your surroundings to jump onto these colossi. Hanging onto them isn’t as difficult as you would think and once your on there, you’re usually on there until you finish these giants off. And let’s just say if you do have difficulty finding their weakness... when this happens, Dormin will speak to you and give you suggestions on how to take them down. Sure, these hints can be rather vague, but they’re better than nothing.
