The newest Ridge Racer game won’t see release on a console. Instead it’s coming to the Nintendo DS. Nintendo and Namco are becoming very close friends these days, so it’s no surprise to see Ridge Racer DS being developed by an internal Nintendo studio. Nintendo Software Technologies (NST) will be developing the title, and have the touch screen covering a controversial area: the steering wheel. That’s right, instead of using the trusty D-pad, you’ll be able to control your car with the stylus. Word on the street, however, says this control style isn’t implemented well. Hopefully, NST will add a second option for those who like a more traditional racing game. It would be a shame if they didn’t because the game looks awesome running at 30 frames per second, boasting 20 courses for the players to race across a smooth wireless connection that supports 6 players. The 20 courses will be located in three familiar places: the Ridge Racer city, the Northwest course from Ridge Racer Revolution, and a sweltering desert area. Ridge Racer DS appears to have all of the pieces in place except for one: the controls. If NST can fix this scheme, or at least implement an optional, more traditional one, they may have a winner on their hands. |
