Introduction
When I was first given this game to review I was somewhat happy to see what appeared to be a very interesting RTS game. However after actually putting the game in and going through the very lengthy installation I was greeted with sloppy voice acting that sounded like Rednecks from hell. The gameplay is pretty decent but I cannot get over the apparent rushed feel to the game. Perhaps that’s why its on the Anytime, Anywhere, Twenty Bucks program.Presentation
So the story goes, you have to go back in time to run some sort of mining operation, the product is a weird miracle substance. Not to mention the mines are in Siberia, No it couldn’t get any worse, or could it? The real reason you are sent back in time is to transport the substance to Alaska so that the united states control it at the point of its discovery. Now for the worse part the Russians are also back in time to protect what is rightfully theirs.Graphics & Sound
Ok, not only are the graphics terrible they are extremely confusing. Voice Acting is bad at its best and utterly horrible in my opinion. Plus the cartoon heads given to the characters when they speak are completely stupid and do not suit the game at all. Also the modern look of the background doesn’t connect well with Ape-men.Gameplay
In one of those desperate attempts to shock gamers as if we were back in 1990, Original War actually combines elements of several genres, to the extent that naming your units automatically makes something a role-playing game. These units can gain experience in four classes--soldier, mechanic, engineer, and scientist--and once they have been killed, they are lost forever. This leads to a lot of saving and reloading, since units die very quickly. The game contains player levels and what not, but the creators decided to make everything quite annoying in that you do tons of work for nothing. Overall this is a major disappointment but for twenty bucks you cannot expect much.Lasting Appeal
Cave men? Ape men? Construction worker? Or Taxi Drivers? I’m not sure who this game would suit more. I mean really If you could rent PC games I would say its a rental at best. But definitely not worth a purchase. Conclusion
Ok, Ok, Ok, This isn’t the worse game to ever grace your hard drive. It will keep you busy for a little while if you have nothing better to do. Who knows maybe your the type of redneck who might find the voices at home? But for the rest of the world, we are not.
